Living in the West Midlands
The region of the West Midlands is an extremely urbanised area including major cities such as Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Coventry making it the most populous area after London. There are however also very rural areas such as Shropshire and Herefordshire in the west and the Peak District National Park crosses over into the northern part of Staffordshire. Alongside Britain’s busiest and most popular cities this region has five areas of outstanding beauty making this region of Britain perhaps the most geographically diverse.
Moving to the West Midlands?
Being the busiest British city after London it’s no surprise that it’s home to one of the best shopping areas in the UK. The Bullring shopping centre ranges from the top designers to popular high street labels and with many cafes, restaurants and bars going shopping in Birmingham is a truly brilliant day out.
Many parts of the county of Shropshire are of geographical and historical significance. The north of the county is more urbanised and has most of the county’s larger towns such as Shrewsbury, Oswestry and Whitchurch whereas the south is much more rural. Britain’s longest river, the River Severn runs through the county where the Shropshire Hills make up about a quarter of the whole region and is deemed an area of outstanding beauty.
Coventry is also a major city within the region home to two universities, Coventry University in the city centre and the University of Warwick to the south of the area. There is a strong student culture in the city as well as a sense of tradition and history. The Cathedral for example has an amazing history and streets within the city have retained their medieval buildings and pubs.
In the beautiful rural country side in the county of Warwickshire is the town of Stratford-Upon-Avon, birthplace of William Shakespeare. Come and see Shakespeare’s house, visit the famous Royal Shakespeare Company or wonder along the River Avon and experience the beautiful surrounding country side.
For those who long for beautiful scenery and idyllic walks Staffordshire is definitely a place for you for in this one county lies the Peak District National Park, part of the National forest and the Cannock Chase.
