FMB in construction boost call

The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) has called for the
government to help the construction industry to keep going during
the recession, pointing to the needs of people like first-time
buyers.
Noting the drop in new starts this year, FMB director of external
affairs Brian Berry noted there are "many first-time buyers unable
to get a mortgage let alone afford a first home".
He said the government should not use today's Queen's Speech to
introduce new means of burdening the industry with bureaucracy and
instead help it to meet government building aims, including those
for new affordable and eco-friendly homes.
Mr Berry concluded that legislations should be seen as a "last
resort" and the emphasis be placed instead on "simplifying the
existing regulatory burden".
The programme of new legislation announced today included
strengthening banking regulations.
